A Unique Piece!
This is a large 19th century Corpus from a Central American church. It is in excellent condition largely intact except for the missing right pinky finger and the old paint chip on the nose. No restoration whatsoever. Carved from a very dense type of wood from three pieces (two arms and the corpus) with the arms joined together by dowels. Original patina covers the corpus and most of the arms. Gesso over polychrome paint is also largely intact. Note the carving and painting style. The eyes and beard have star shaped design and the tress over the shoulder counter balances the loin cloth knot on the right hip. The original crown of thorns is removable. It will hang on a bare wall with a simple picture hanger.
