Antique wood carved santo of St. Francis of Assisi (San Francisco de Asis) or Saint Francis is often depicted holding a dove with the Christ wound (stigmata) on his right hand. It measures 9-5/8" high by 3” wide by 2" deep at the base. He has glass eyes and traces of eyelashes can be seen upon close inspection, especially over the right eye. Some paint loss on the base, the back of the robe and the back of the head exposing the gesso. There are three small holes also in the back of the head probably used to hold a halo. The dark brown paint of the robe have crackled over the years and have gotten shiny in some areas (could it be wax residue from candles?) There is a nice flow of the robes and the rope belt is real and gold gilt as is the floral design throughout the robe. The carved hood on his back is very unique and I have not seen it sticking out that much in these type of carvings. The left hand is curiously oversized, but not as pronounced as the santos from New Mexico. The original owner says he bought this in Spain from an antique dealer who felt this santo was carved in the early 1800s in the Philippines. Apparently it was not uncommon for Spain to acquire religious carvings from the Philippines during that era.
