San Antonio de Padua, 19th Century, Brazil
This is a wonderful antique 19th century carved wood Santo figure in Superb Museum condition. It is a typical representation of Saint Anthony or San Antonio de Padua holding the Child Jesus and a bible with his left hand. St. Anthony is a doctor of the Catholic Church and is a patron saint of lost articles. The santo measures about 11 ¾ inches tall X 5 ¾ inches wide X 3 ½ inches deep at the base and weighs 1.4 lbs. It is made entirely of Spanish cedar wood. The carving is very artistically carved with flowing robes, facial features and the perfectly preserved finely carved hands. The paint gesso combination is very thick as can be seen from the chipped areas of the robe. Saint Anthony is wearing a blue green robe with gold real rope belt and accents. The Child Jesus sitting on the Bible is wearing a dirty cream vestment while holding a blue globe. I wondered how this Santo was kept intact through the years, but then it explains to me that its workmanship is very high quality and is built to last. Notice the intricately carved tonsured hair and its seemingly alive glass eyes. It seems to me also that his nose was intentionally carved bending towards the right. Facial coloring is ivory like porcelain in texture with minute cracks due to age. The base is accented with gold gilt and painted with various shades of marbled green. This is truly a unique piece and does not have that primitive and unrefined folk art character I have seen with Mexican or Philippine Santos. The only wear I can see is some chipping at the robe and base. In almost perfect preservation! This is a very unique piece that will pass down from generation to generation.
