Nino de Praga, Infant of Prague, Santo Nino, Child Jesus, Peru, Early 20th Century
Rare in its form!
This is an early 20th century Infant Jesus of Prague, Santo Nino or Child Jesus hand carved by Cusqueños craftsmen out of a type of Andean wood called Aliso. Overall height including the base is 14 inches and the base is 8 X 6 inches. What is unique with this santo is that the extremities, the head and the base painting seems to have a plasticized texture although this paint is now brittle due to age, but is 95% intact. Only the right foot has some of the paint peeled off and some minor touch ups on the vestment. It is in a rather excellent condition for its age aside from a votive candle burn at the front top left of base (as you may know, the natives constantly light candles in front of their images as part of their devotion). A truly excellent example of traditional folk cusqueños santo making carved from wood, gessoed (thickly at the vestment) and painted uniquely from local and natural pigments. Take note of the glass eyes and the elaborately painted base. Notice the solid silver orb. It weighs a massive 30 grams for its small size of 1 ½” high and ¾” diameter. The 18th century rare massive antique silver potencies which are 1 5/8” long and a total of 30 grams are obviously not original to the statue because they are much older although by some coincidence fit the original potencia holes of the santo.
